{Music Monday} Play & Repeat…

I’m honoring my old blogging routine by bringing back the Music Monday feature. Music is a huge part of my life & a necessity in the studio when I’m working. My musical tastes vary dramatically depending on mood & what I’m doing. I suppose everyone is like that.  I learned quickly when Chris & I started living together, that if, There Goes Rhymin’ Simon is playing, that means Chris is dusting or deep cleaning. For me, I find that I like mellow music with a nice rhythm when I’m screen printing. What seems to get consistent studio play is the fairly new, Bahamas is Afie, album. Here’s one of my favorite songs of the album- along with a little snippet that introduced me to the great trick of putting my iPhone in a (an empty) mug when listening to music. I like listening to Afie talk about his philosophy for the album as well – it’s one that resonates with me & my work right now.

So, this album is my recent “go to” album – one that I can play continuously without the need to wash the ink off my hands & switch it out.

What are you listening to these days?

{Monday Music} Blunderbuss…

The studio is taking a break from the KLT assistant’s recent favorite,  TMBG’s  Here Comes Science (sorry kiddo) & moving on to something that will take me through a long nights work. Jack White’s new Blunderbuss will work just fine thank you. Happy Music Monday! What are you listening to these days?

{Music Monday} Color…

I’ve been extra drawn to color lately- playing with my colored pencils on my worktable in between sewing (see instagram above). When I browsed Alix’s colorful Friday link Hootenanny, I replayed this video a few times. I thought it would be a nice way to start the week. Happy Music Monday

{Music Monday} Texture & Tone…

Andrew Bird’s new album, Break it Yourself, came out last Tuesday & it’s been playing non-spot in the studio ever since. I actually listened to it & became hooked when it was available on npr’s “first listen” before the album release. I know Andrew Bird gets a lot of blog time here at the klt:sketchbook, but he really is my favorite musician. It’s his approach to music & his willingness to experiment that I’m really struck by. This album has received mixed reviews being called, songs of quiet contemplation” which I really respond positively to- it’s perfect for when I work in the studio. It also was recommended to listen to it early in the morning or late at night- not during busy/rushing hours. I suppose that may explain why I like it as well. AB seems to take risks & explore things that he is interested in, rather than being concerned strictly with what is going to sell. Which as an artist myself, I embrace & admire.

“Since I first picked up the violin, I’ve been very interested in tone and texture: I would have very visceral reactions to the texture of a snare drum or a pedal steel guitar or a violin,” Bird tells NPR’s Linda Wertheimer. “To this day, I’m still very interested in the range, palette and colors that I have to work with.”

I listened to this great music interview yesterday on npr called, Andrew Bird’s World of Wit, Whimsy and Whistling (March 11, 2012) that’s worth a listen if you are an AB fan —> here This quote from npr interview really struck a cord with me – I can identify 100% with his words as they are my interests in my work as well (but substituting musical instruments with drawing/painting instruments). Happy Music Monday

{Music Monday} Muppet love…

I’m a big Flight of the Conchords fan & of course I love the Muppets, so I was really happy to see Bret McKenzie’s Man or Muppet take home the Oscar for best song tonight. I believe I let out a happy yelp when they called Bret’s name. So, how could I not post this video today?  Did you watch the Academy Awards? Who were your favorite nominees & winners?

{Music Monday} My dream concert…

One of the most frequent {Music Monday} artists mentioned on this blog is Andrew Bird (& most played in my studio). He is one of my favorite musicians without a doubt. The thing that continuously interests me about his music, is his ability to collaborate & contribute to so many cool projects. I was actually planning on doing this post about his contribution to the Muppet Movie Soundtrack (because we saw it this weekend- & I love the song & Kermit). However, I found out about, “Andrew Bird & Ian Schneller’s Sonic Arboretum” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago & it stopped my in my cyber tracks. What an amazing concert that will be! Ok Santa… did you hear that? Hmmm, well- I suppose that is a real long shot but it’s worth putting on my pretend list. If I was a muppet, I could travel by map. So, If you are in the Chicago area & go to this, will you give me a play by play – complete with a description of what socks he was wearing?

So,  anyway, back to my original thought – here is a video of my favorite musician singing my favorite frog’s song. And yes, the Muppet Movie was really good. I loved it…. I can’t help but think that the new muppet character, Walter, was inspired a bit by Andrew Bird himself.  Happy Music Monday! Hope you have a great week!
