{Inspiration} Fisher Price Toys & Chris Theiss

{Chris in his studio – 2012 }
There has been so much inspiration that I’ve wanted to share in the last few months but deadlines, mom responsibilities, and studio time have been my top priority. However, the art making of my studio neighbor is a constant, creative wonder that I’m lucky enough to witness daily. There is so much work that needs to be seen and today seemed like a good day to post. Chris Theiss is one of those artists that is dedicated, talented, hard working, disciplined, knowledgable, and completely underexposed. He teaches ceramics at Western Washington University and at Skagit Valley College while holding a design job (designing toys no less) as well. Juggling three jobs and a family hasn’t stopped him from finding time to make his work, although it isn’t easy. He hunkers down and works even on those days when I’m sure he’d rather be sleeping. He’s the real deal…
{Oh No Pinky & Perky Loves to Spoon – whiteware, vitreous slip, sgraffito}
{Devil Dog – whiteware, vitreous slip, sgraffito}
{Puffy Takes a Bad Turn- whiteware, vitreous slip, sgraffito}

As you may know from past posts, I love Vintage Fisher price toys. They hit a nostalgic chord with me and before I knew it, I had a little collection of toys lining up on my studio shelves. It wasn’t long before I noticed toys missing from their spot in my studio – only to find them in Chris’ studio. Chris started working with vintage toy imagery in his work – which not only am I excited about on an aesthetic level, but in my mind, it justifies my crazy need to collect and search out these vintage toy gems.

{Work Play – whiteware, vitreous slip, sgraffito}
Along with his love of vintage toys, Chris’ ceramic pieces incorporate his interest in interior
spaces, drawing, and story telling as well by utilizing a technique called sgraffito. Sayer’s room is a favorite space in the house and you can see glimpses of it pop up often in Chris’ work.

Last year, Chris was a part of a show at Red Star Studios called He Said, She Said with ceramic artist Kathy King. The show is reviewed in June’s issue of Ceramics Art and Perception Magazine and as if that wasn’t cool enough, Chris’ work is on the front page!  Nice work Chris – I’m so glad to let the creative energy that you exude wash over me.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Over the river & through the flats, to grandmother’s (& grandfather’s) house we go- La Conner to be exact.

Turkeys used to roam the streets of La Conner freely- which was so cool to see. However, they were asked to move & are hanging out somewhere else today. So, I guess we won’t see them this year.

We are all going to take it easy today. Maybe we’ll watch a movie, listen to music … or a enjoy a game of Twister (Sayer’s new favorite game) before our food coma hits.

Then it’s back over the river for us. It will be a simple & easy day. But there will be thankful reflection for sure. The list is long. Happy Thanksgiving to my US friends (& happy day to my International buddies) ! What are you up to today?

{Photos} hanging out in kiddo’s room…

We’ve been hanging out in Sayer’s room a lot lately. I love to watch him play & tend to reach for the camera when he isn’t looking. It seems like his room is always changing to respond to how fast he’s growing & changing. I’ve got an ongoing documentation of the morphing of his space on flickr & added a bunch of new pictures this weekend. We’ve replaced a table & chairs with a vintage school desk & chair (from a local salvage yard)- the table is now in the living room.  We have some new prints that Sayer helped pick out (by Blanca Gomez & Jayme McGown) & some new vintage finds- a Fisher Price school house & village (including a post office & fire station) – both from the late 60’s early 70’s. Well, I’m excited to say that my snapping of the camera & obsessive room documentation was was shared on Ohdeedoh yesterday! I guess it’s a good thing that we’ve had so many inside/rainy play days lately because I was ready to pass on new photos when asked.
Thanks to Sarah Rae Trover for writing a such a sweet post & to the kind people that left comments. You can view the rest of the room tour here.   Wow, this week is shaping up quite nicely! How is your week going?

{Vintage Fisher Price} Barky & The Happy Hauler…

Ever since I saw that a new little junk store opened up downtown, I’ve been just itchin’ to give it a browse through. Today I snuck down for a quickie look & found two little vintage fisher price toys calling my name (for mere pennies).
Barky & the Happy Hauler just had to come home with me. They’ve definitely seen better days, but I love that about them. The Happy Hauler even has a tulip on it so how could I pass it up, given we live among so many tulips? I get so excited when I find stuff like this & can’t wait to see Sayer’s reaction to my finds. One of my favorite things to do is show him these treasures for the first time, when I’m behind a camera.
Because honestly, as much as I love finding cool vintage toys- I love watching Sayer play even more. So it’s extra fun to document both. Tonight Sayer put the Happy Hauler in his firehouse garage & Barky is now the firehouse dog. Safe to say that he is as smitten with these toys as I am.  He can even do a nice Barky expression. Hey wait, is that Barky on his tee you ask? Quite possibly…

Hope everyone is having a terrific weekend!
