{Shop Update} sweaters = slugs…

The fact that I’m posting about sweaters & slugs a day after posting about the sun & sprinklers is really just an example of a week in the Northwest. It’s been raining for the last two days – after a gorgeous weekend. The slugs are feasting on everything that we planted in our garden & the snails have been greeting us daily underfoot. However, because we have been inside a lot this summer, we’ve been on a cleaning, purging, & reorganizing kick- which brings me to my sweater drawer. I find that I hold on to a lot of sweaters more because I like the color, texture, or pattern more than that they really fit me well. So, to soften the blow of having to get  rid of them- in between working on orders, I decided to make some cozy slugs  that won’t munch on our tomatoes & basil…

It really is a fun way to pass on some of my favorite sweaters. The bodies are even softer than when I use polar tec fleece. Besides, I have a blast coming up with combinations & personalities. I hope you enjoy my sweaters as much as I did…

{Fabric Friday} Marimekko for Spring…

Bears hibernate during the winter, but I collect Marimekko fabric. I stash it away like a squirrel stashes nuts. I’ve kept my eye open for vintage & hard to find Marimekko remnants for my plush for months now. My stack is growing & my ideas are flowing.

These three cheerful amigos joined the other colorful slugs yesterday (in honor of Cinco de Mayo). They really mimic the gorgeous color of the many tulip fields that I’m surrounded by in our valley.

While I certainly have lots of plans for klt:goodies using my Marimekko fabric, for some reason, I love making slugs with these happy textiles. The idea of a kiddo toting around these vibrant & cheerful friends make me smile. I have to say, Sayer has already adopted one from this new stack. Can you guess which one? I knew right away which one he would be drawn to. He already has two slugs, but they could use a little break & a new friend. Happy Fabric Friday! Do you have a favorite fabric from the stash?

As a side note:
klt:works loves moms! To celebrate you lovely mommas out there, everyone gets 25% off the entire KLT etsy shop this weekend  with the code “KLTMOM” (offer ends Monday Morning at 8am PST)! Happy Mother’s Day!

{Slugs!} The Double Conk

Slugs on the doorstep, on the sidewalk, in the peonies- they are everywhere! It is June and seeing slugs around every corner is a little strange. Although, I am used to seeing a lot of slugs, I live in the northwest and there is always a pile of them keeping me company in my studio. But the slugs that hang out in the klt:studio are sweet and soft – not gooey and gross.

The klt:slug lovey was designed and created when Sayer was about 6 months old. It is the first plushie that I made for klt:works as a new mom. I watched what Sayer gravitated to, what he liked to feel, the shapes that fit nicely in his arms, and what seemed to comfort him. When thinking about what the critter should be, the shape and the area that we live in suggested strongly that it should be a slug. The slug lovies, or the “Gunks” as Sayer called them at first, have organic antennae with a knotted base -perfect for chewing. They are super soft and made with durable polartec fleece that those of us in the northwest, commonly wear year round. Sayer’s “Gunk”- now called “Conk”, has been washed hundreds of times. Sayer doesn’t really go anywhere without it. While his antennae are a bit lackluster now, they are still just as effective for chewing, sticking in his nose, putting between his toes, or as a general handle.

I was sort of getting a little grossed out by Conk and on Valentine’s Day, encouraged Sayer to pick out a shiny new friend for his Conk. I took him to the studio and let him pick from a big bin of slugs that I had recently made. He wanted nothing to do with it. He said that is Conk was all he wanted. Well, a few weeks ago, Sayer was in the studio with me and saw a new slug in the bin that he immediately snatched up and walked out with. It was a slug that I had made for a new project that I am working on. I was grateful that he wanted it actually- it gives me a chance to sneak Conk in for a bath (laundry) a little more often. Now Sayer takes both with him everywhere. He calls them “Double Conks”. I thought that one lovey was hard enough to keep track of – but now we have two to wrangle up before bed.

Yes, story time is a little crowded these days but I don’t mind one bit. It warms my heart to see how Sayer loves his little critters. It is a pretty gratifying feeling knowing that I made something that he loves and enjoys so much. He often lets me borrow the green double Conk and I have to say, I might just have to make an adult size soon. They are nice to sleep with – but Chris isn’t bad either.  Did you have a favorite lovey from when you were a child? Do you still have it?

{Tagging Game #8} I have been tagged…

I woke up this morning to find that I had been tagged! Thanks to Helen, one of my favorite textile designers, for adding me to her tag list. This will be fun! Sort of funny timing really, because I just received my lovely order of fabrics from her and was planning on writing about them for my Fabric Friday post, so stay tuned for more about her beautiful work tomorrow. I just loved the photo that Helen posted on her blog of her son Stanley, under a blur of handmade butterflies (on her birthday).

My computer is a mess of photo folders- I don’t do the best job burning and removing them from the desktop. So I was pleasantly surprised to find this to be my 8th picture in my 8th folder. It is a collage that I made of Sayer (last fall) that makes me smile. I made him a slug lovey plush that has become his best friend, sort of his “go to” pal. He calls it his “Conk” (which used to be Gunk) and it goes EVERYWHERE with him. It has been washed over 100 times at least. I took all of these photos right before his nighttime story and this was the series of events that took place with Conk’s antennae. I can’t even describe, in words, how good it feels that Sayer loves something that I made him. He is sort of my tester for klt:works and this little slug plushie has been one of my favorite things to make. Ironically, I made a Gunk with Helen’s fabric too.

It was really fun to look at old photos. Helen said it best when she mentioned that she was struck by how quickly her little boy was growing.  I had that same feeling.

So, here are the rules:
The Tag game goes as follows:
Go to the 8th folder in which you store your photos
Select the 8th photo
Post it to your blog and tell the story behind it.
After following the above instructions, you are ‘supposed’ to tag 8 other bloggers.
Here is my list of bloggers that I want to invite to play. However, don’t feel any pressure from me. I know you are all busy! Just join in if the spirit moves you.

Have Fun!
