{Inspiration} Paper Moon

First off, the new issue of La Petite Magazine came out last week & it’s a beautiful collection of inspiration. I was particularly excited about my contribution. I know I’ve said it before, but I absolutely love dreaming up my, For the Love of Books article. I came up with the idea of a collection of books that had to do with the stars & the moon last summer inspired by the magazine’s theme & Sayer’s current interests. I knew just what I wanted to do for the photo shoot & I thought I would show you a bit of the “behind the scenes process & inspiration.
I’ve always loved the vintage images of people posing on the moon & used them as my inspiration. I tried to wrap my brain around how to make a similar backdrop for Sayer to sit on for my La Petite photo shoot.  It was nice to bounce ideas around with Chris – he was really helpful in the process. I ended up painting a star backdrop & a moon that I made out of cardboard.
It was all very balanced & strategic in how things were placed. We had a bench underneath for Sayer to sit on – it was a bit fragile. Sayer & I had a very fun morning  taking a trip to the moon in a rocket ship. I never posed him- he was in a land of make-believe the whole time that was intoxicating.

He still talks about the day that we went to the moon & I’m so happy that we have that day documented! We also have the moon in our bedroom now for a nice reminder that we should never be afraid to reach for the moon.

For the Love of Books, it’s on pages 112 -115 in La Petite Magazine.

Happy Friday! Hope you have a great weekend!

{La Petite Magazine} Issue #8

The new La Petite Magazine came out last Monday & I’ve been excited to really sink my teeth into it! My week, along with the weekend, went by like a blur & I’m just now getting a chance to relax a bit & really look through this beautiful issue. This first image really stood out to me. It’s also very nice to see some of my favorite people & artists included like, a DIY from Fawn & Forest (Summer), a Q&A with Fournier (Anabel), & plush by Jess Quinn.  Issue #8’s For the Love of Books focused on “ABC books” & is particularly close to my heart. I dipped into both mine & Sayer’s stash for this one. You can read it on page pages 102-105- it was so fun to put together.

I hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend (if they have one)!

{La Petite Magazine} Sayer’s Book Corner #10

My little guy has music in his heart & marches to his own drummer. When I heard about the book Symphony City by Amy Martin – it piqued my curiosity. The book description reads, “Symphony City is an exciting adventure story for children and parents who love music, art, and big imagination.” Yep, that is us in a nutshell! So I bought it for Sayer after he went to the symphony with his grandma.

Each beautiful page of the book takes us on an adventure by following the sound of music all throughout the city. Let’s take a little peek…

Symphony City reminds us that there is music & color everywhere – which is a message that I absolute love. As a complete bonus, the book jacket unfolds to a poster of the image that Sayer is looking at in the photo above (it’s his favorite in the book along with the drummer). This book is a perfect fit for story time in our house.

* Oh & on a fashion note:
Along with loving music, Sayer really loves color too. Which is  why he likes to wear bright colors. His pants, tee, raincoat & socks are all from our favorite,  Polarn O. Pyret  (they have awesome sales – like right now).

Thanks for stopping by! Happy reading…

{La Petite Magazine} Sayer’s Book Corner # 9

All curled & cozy in bed while reading bunny books- does it get any better? With Easter right around the corner, we have been diving into my vintage pile of rabbit books for some hopping adventures. Sayer’s all chilled out & reading Whitman Giant Tell-A-Tale Book: Peter Rabbit, illustrated by Rod Ruth (1963). Let’s hop down memory lane & check out  a few more…
 Wonder Books
Sonny the Lucky Bunny, pictures by Art Seiden (1952) & The Hungry Bunny, pictures by Bea Rabin Seiden (1951)

Little Golden Books
Duck and his Friends pictures by Richard Scarry (1949) & Rabbit and his Friends by Richard Scarry (1953)

One of my all time favorite books is, The Velveteen Rabbit  by Margery Williams. I still think about this book when I’m making plush critters in my studio & wonder if a child will ever make my creations real.

“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become REAL. It doesn’t happen all at once. You become. It takes a long time. Generally, by the time you are REAL, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are REAL you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.” (page 17)

Hope you have a wonderful Easter weekend!

{La Petite Magazine} Sayer’s Book Corner #8

Kiki, our beautiful grey kitty, was my first muse & was just a kitten when I started KLTworks. Needless to say, she has a very special place in my heart. So much so, I bought Sayer the book, Kitten’s First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes when I found out I was pregnant. This book about a curious, adventurous, & persistent kitty was an immediate favorite in our house- we actually renamed it, Kiki’s First Full Moon. Sayer wanted to share some of the books highlights with you…

You can tell by the worn pages, how much this book has been read. This brave & inquisitive kitty has a way of melting your heart- especially if you have a kitty of your own.
Thanks for stopping by- see you next week!

{Vintage Inspiration} Mom & Pop favorites…

One of the things I enjoy the most about writing, For the Love of Books, for La Petite Magazine is taking the photos to go along with the article. Honestly, I take the photos before I write- I’m a visual person. This last issue’s theme was “vintage surf” &  I knew right away that I wanted to include those little striped swim trunks in the shoot. Believe it or not, they were Chris’ favorite swim trunks when he was around Sayer’s age. I couldn’t believe that he still had them! Once I found that Snoopy surfing book, I knew that one of my favorite childhood items needed to be included as well- my plush Snoopy. I loved including these tidbits of nostalgia in my book feature & wanted wanted to share. These are a few of my favorite outtakes from the shoot. I only wish I had a photo of mini Chris in these swim trunks now.

{La Petite} Sayer’s Book Corner #4…
