{Fun} Documenting the 40’s…

It started last year & Sayer was my inspiration. I had an idea to officially document his birthday every year by taking photos of him in our photo studio. I would come up with an idea of how to take the photos by using his interests from the previous year as my guide. I turned 40 last year & felt that it would be a good time for me to start documenting my birthdays too.

Now over the years, I slowly started to shy away from the camera myself- being much more content behind the lens rather than in front of it. However, this little exercise in documenting each year has helped that shyness a bit. Deep down- I’m really a ham & it takes the right photographer to bring that out. I started realizing that music, a fun idea, & a timer on the camera was just what I needed to really enjoy the self portrait process. I now look forward to my birthday for a different reason than I used to –  so I can fiddle around in the studio with the camera. This year I was excited to play around with the idea of being literally in the ’40’s & my love of vintage cameras. Yes, I just finally saw the Woody Allen movie, Midnight in Paris, which I think inspired my little photo shoot tremendously.

I think it will be cool to look at February 17th every year through my eyes. This year the focus was the camera & last year it was balloons…. but really, it’s always about having a really fun, creative hour to myself on my birthday. Do you have a birthday tradition?

{Everyday Inspiration} May First…

It’s a beautiful day here in the Northwest- the sun is shining & everything is bright! What a perfect day to celebrate May Day & the birthday of someone special…

Chris hasn’t changed a bit? He has the same style & expressions evident in these awesome pictures. Boy do I wish he still had those clothes to pass down to Sayer! I just love these photos of him!  I think the damage from the tape I water marks make them even cooler really. They actually look like they could’ve come from a contemporary kid’s fashion mag. Vintage photos at their best! I’m sure they will inspire something in the studio someday- I think the palette already has…
Happy Birthday Chris!! Thanks for being my Everyday Inspiration! Ok, off to do a few festive errands before the little celebration tonight.

So if you are in La Conner today, pop in to hutch studio & wish him a Happy Birthday. He’s busy working & making interesting things out of cardboard. Better yet, leave him a note on the hutch studio facebook page … that would knock his very cool socks off! Happy May Day everyone!

{Fun} the big four- zero…

Today was a good day. I turned 40 & it wasn’t that bad. Actually… I liked it. I feel like I sort of earned it really. It feels good to know who I am & to have learned a thing or two along those bumpy roads to here.

One of the things that my birthdays continuously remind me of (other than the reality of gravity), is that  I have some truly wonderful people in my life. – Remarkable people who make me feel so lucky & brighten my every day. I find that I’m surrounded by friends who always go out of their way to make me feel special & I’m genuinely touched. On a day like today, I want to give something back- something simple & sweet for those that I care about….

Mini Cheese Cakes
24 Vanilla Wafers
1 tsp. Pure Vanilla Extract
2/3 Cup Sugar
3 large eggs
3 – 8oz. Philly Cream Cheese (Original)
Large can Cherry Pie Filling
1/2 tsp. Almond Extract
* Line muffin tins with cupcake liners.  Place one vanilla wafer in each.
* Beat sugar, eggs & cream cheese for 5 minutes until smooth.  Add vanilla.
* Divide into muffin cups & bake at 325 degrees for about 15 minutes.  Will crack and brown slightly.
* Cool and chill overnight.
* Mix almond extract into Cherry Pie Filling to cover “tiny” taste.
Put 3-5 cherries on each serving. Can be eaten with fingers or spoon.
Makes 24-28 cheese cakes.

I’m telling you – this is goooooood cheesecake. I’ve requested this cheesecake for my birthdays since the days of braces, rollerskating, & slumber parties. Tonight, was no exception. We introduced Sayer to the wonders of these little gems & tomorrow (as tradition dictates) they will be my breakfast. This secret weakness of mine lies in your hands now… enjoy!  Thank you for your friendship- it means the world to me (& it’s not just the wine & cheesecake talkin’)…
