{Inspiration} The first day of spring…

In 1999, on the first day of spring, I married Chris in an old mansion on a hill. The mansion houses a quilt museum now & is considered one of the 10 most haunted places in Western Washington. Interesting… because all of our photos were taken in black & white film &  some have a very odd quality about them (I might have to do a post with the strangest photos- they’re very Bela Lugosi like). We also had a vintage theme going so  it’s sometimes hard to tell what year it was- which sort of adds to the mysterious quality. Last year on our anniversary, I started the task of going through boxes of negatives & photos, scanning some of them into the computer (because we were married before digital was common). You can see some more of those photos in my, First day of Spring -1999 post last yearI think I will go though & scan some every year on our anniversary-  it’s really fun to cruise down memory lane. I also love noting some of the cool details in the photos- like textures, images, patterns, shapes. It’s great for some nostalgic & artistic inspiration- like watching an old movie. That evening in 1999, we started our adventure as a married couple & 13 years later, I can only imagine what kind of adventures are on our horizon…but they’re bound to be creative & involve a lot of laughing!
Happy First Day of Spring!!

{Fun Event} whirligigs & thread…

T-Pot Whirlygig
Two years ago, Hutch Studio opened it’s doors to the public. It was the Annual Arts Alive weekend in La Conner & Hutch Studio celebrated the opening with art demonstrations all day- I happened to have been one of them. Saturday, Hutch Studio is celebrating it’s 2 year anniversary much in the same way. It’s Arts Alive weekend again & Chris will be doing a whirligig demo from 12-2pm & I will do a demo in how I draw with thread, from 2-4pm
If you are in the area, pop on by, we would love to see you! Chris has been working on some new pieces for a show that will be going on this weekend as well. Stop by Maple Hall in La Conner to view his new work (details here). The piece below is made with cardboard & is a peek into the world of Hutch Studio

If you aren’t able to come visit us in person, you can enjoy free shipping all weekend at the Hutch Studio etsy shop! Just use “hutchfreeship” during checkout. Hope everyone has a creative weekend!

{Music Monday} First day of Spring 1999…

On the first day of Spring in 1999, Chris & I got married in an old mansion that is home to a textile & quilt museum. It was about 70 degrees & all of the daffodil fields were in bloom. The La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum (aka the Gaches Mansion) sits on the top of a hill in La Conner & at the time, we lived just down the steps in an apartment above the stores on the main street of town (near the water). Our wedding was inspired by the mansion, the 1930’s, & old Fred Astaire movies. So it was entirely shot in black & white photos. However, the odd thing to think about, is that this was right before digital cameras took over. So… we only have boxes of negatives- nothing digital. I actually remember trading some of my old oil paintings for all of our negatives with our photographer. I went through our box of photos today & wanted to scan & post a few- it was fun sifting through them. (My brother was my “maid of honor” & Chris’ sister was his “best man”.)

We watched tons of old Fred Astaire’s & Ginger Rogers movies & studied their dancing before the wedding. Cheek to Cheek was our first dance. Happy Music Monday & Happy Spring!
