{Flash Back} weekend getaway…

Piling into the car and driving for four hours, over the mountains, to Lake Chelan every summer is a strong childhood memory. The always rotating tapes of the Chipmunks, Pat Benatar, Willie Nelson, & Eddy Rabbit played while my brother and I had to have an ice chest placed between us in the back seat so that we wouldn’t poke each other. Somehow our magic slates just didn’t occupy us the whole time. When Sayer was born, we started up the tradition again of having a mini summer vacation in Lake Chelan with all of our families together. We just got back yesterday from a long weekend there and I wanted to document and share the nostalgia.

The first year, we actually stayed in one of the same exact rooms that we stayed in 36 years ago! Nothing had really changed except the painting above the couch was a little more modern (not much though). Since then, we have been staying in a place just a few blocks away from our original hotel. However, Brian (my brother) and I snuck over and tripped through memory lane before the weekend was over. As you see, things don’t change that much (these photos are actually taken in the same spots as the original photos).

The Lakeview Drive-In is still one of the first stops once we get to Chelan. Although, they don’t serve the hotdogs in the little wiener dog paper packaging anymore, the experience is  still how we remember it.

The next stop is The Variety Store (used to be Sprouse-Reitz) which looks exactly the same inside as it used to. The three most important purchases used to be, and still are : buckets, inflatable ball (or air mattress), and thongs.

The pool is also one of the first destinations. My glasses still sit on the little table next to the lounge chair… just the beverage has changed.

Renting a ski boat to tube or ski behind was something we used to do almost every year as well. This year, Brian was the only one that jumped in to be towed behind the boat. But we all went along for the ride. Sayer thought it was pretty darn cool to watch. We go off season now, so the water (and weather) isn’t quite as warm as what we remember.

On our way home, we stopped at a little Bavarian inspired town called Leavenworth. It has changed a bit from the 70’s and ’80’s, but not a lot. The whole trip sort of felt like we stepped into a time warp.

And there you have it- a peek into our  weekend getaway. I love being able to share some of my childhood memories with Chris and Sayer while making new memories as a family. Do you have a traditional vacation spot?

{Fabric Friday} back to school….

When the yellow buses start cruisin’ the streets again, and there is a crispness is in the air, it could only mean one thing… back to school. I get fairly nostalgic around this time of year and gravitate towards certain colors and patterns. I have literally gone back to school more years than not really. After college I went on to graduate school, and after that, I taught at the local community college part time (for about 12 yrs) but seemed to most consistently teach in the Fall along with my husband. The last Fall that I taught painting, was when I was pregnant which was very interesting and there is a whole different list of textures & palettes associated with that. But generally, Fall reminds me of earthy rich tones, argyle, plaid, cozy textures, apple & flower imagery, and the feeling that anything can happen.

The influence of the ’70’s and the ’80’s is so apparent when you browse in any store these days. So, it isn’t just me getting caught in my own memories… it really is all around. However, have said that, I do tend to pick up fabrics that remind me of a dress I had,  a palette I liked growing up, or any other strong childhood association. The argyle fabric reminds me of the ’80’s and my love for United Colors of Benetton clothing. I had a sweaters, scarves & socks to match that argyle fabric and to this day, am kicking myself for not keeping all of it. The fabrics pictured trigger some little sweet memory along with reminding me of back to school.  The plaid on the top is actually part of a series of Michael Miller fabrics called, “Brady Bunch”.
In this back to school, klt:fabric stash you will find: A little Michael Miller, Lecien, Robert Kaufman, Alexander Henry, & Amy Butler. I hope you enjoy this season whether you or someone you know is going back to school. Each day seems exciting, awkward, and full of endless possibilities- and really that’s when cool stuff happens. Happy Fabric Friday! Enjoy your long weekend…

{Fabric Friday} childhood inspirations…

The last time I went digging through the boxes of childhood photos at my parent’s house, I stumbled on a picture that I immediately snatched up and took home with me. It was a picture of my cousin, Nicole, that her father had taken. I love everything about the photo really- the dress, the backdrop, her hair, her face – so adorable! I knew it would serve as inspiration for something so I kept it in my studio. Nicole and I were born in 1971 (12 hours apart actually) so we are children of the ’70’s. I just sent her this photo and she had wondered if it had influenced her color choices in flowers for her home over the years. While I don’t really remember her in this dress, I can definitely say that I have been drawn this bold and happy palette of our childhood for a long time.

So, here is my klt:fabric stash inspired by my cousin, the ’70’s, and girls born in February. Don’t these colors sing with happiness? In this  stack you will find: Denyse Schmidt, Michael Miller, Jackie Shapiro (Windam), Anna Fishkin (Red Rooster), Robert Kaufman Organics, & some random Japanese imported fabric. Happy Fabric Friday!  Do you have a favorite picture from childhood that inspires you creatively?

{Good Times} Fair Shadows…

It has been ages since I have gone to the county fair. Last night the weather was beautiful and we decided to head down the hill for the local festivities. As always the fair lived up to its reputation and offered up tons of eye candy (which I will get to later). I wanted to share this photo that Chris took of Sayer and I that I really love. The shadows & shapes really work for me compositionally- and the nostalgic quality can’t be beat. Hope you are having a nice weekend….
