{Music Monday} Collaborations & Connections…

I may have mentioned before that was involved in dance classes for pretty much all of my childhood & teen years. Actually an injury is what shifted my attention to painting & art. So, I honed my musical ear towards more instrumental music before my artistic shift. I appreciated experimental music & collaboration from a really early age because of my dance background I think.

I love to learn about artists & the connections that they have with one another. Coincidentally or maybe not- I often tend to like the work of artists who are friends & in different disciplines. I found out about John Cage (musician/composer), Merce Cunningham (dancer/choreographer) & Robert Rauschenberg (fine artist/painter/sculptor) at the same time oddly enough- in college while I was an art major. I was really enamored with the school they all went to called Black Mountain College & dreamed of going to a place where all disciplines were combined. These three guys became favorite artists of mine not only for their work, but for their personalities & attitude about creating.

On my lunch break research tangent, I looked up John Cage because of the NPR tiny desk concert today & stumbled on this little gem. I didn’t realize that he composed music for the film, “Works by Calder”. Alexander Calder is one of my favorite artists as well & one of the reasons I started making mobiles 6 years ago. I felt it was appropriate that when I was packing & shipping mobiles today, I should be listening to this.  Happy Music Monday!

{Music Monday} Texture & Tone…

Andrew Bird’s new album, Break it Yourself, came out last Tuesday & it’s been playing non-spot in the studio ever since. I actually listened to it & became hooked when it was available on npr’s “first listen” before the album release. I know Andrew Bird gets a lot of blog time here at the klt:sketchbook, but he really is my favorite musician. It’s his approach to music & his willingness to experiment that I’m really struck by. This album has received mixed reviews being called, songs of quiet contemplation” which I really respond positively to- it’s perfect for when I work in the studio. It also was recommended to listen to it early in the morning or late at night- not during busy/rushing hours. I suppose that may explain why I like it as well. AB seems to take risks & explore things that he is interested in, rather than being concerned strictly with what is going to sell. Which as an artist myself, I embrace & admire.

“Since I first picked up the violin, I’ve been very interested in tone and texture: I would have very visceral reactions to the texture of a snare drum or a pedal steel guitar or a violin,” Bird tells NPR’s Linda Wertheimer. “To this day, I’m still very interested in the range, palette and colors that I have to work with.”

I listened to this great music interview yesterday on npr called, Andrew Bird’s World of Wit, Whimsy and Whistling (March 11, 2012) that’s worth a listen if you are an AB fan —> here This quote from npr interview really struck a cord with me – I can identify 100% with his words as they are my interests in my work as well (but substituting musical instruments with drawing/painting instruments). Happy Music Monday

{Music Monday} wish I had mango tree…

It’s been a quite day working in the studio with tiny glimmers of sun streaming through the window (in between the gray rain). I think I’m ready for spring & this video just fits my mood today… Happy Music Monday!

{Music Monday} Muppet love…

I’m a big Flight of the Conchords fan & of course I love the Muppets, so I was really happy to see Bret McKenzie’s Man or Muppet take home the Oscar for best song tonight. I believe I let out a happy yelp when they called Bret’s name. So, how could I not post this video today?  Did you watch the Academy Awards? Who were your favorite nominees & winners?
Happy Music Monday

{Music Monday} Clapping Song…

My husband teaches Sayer some fun songs & this one is the latest. He remembered it from his childhood – so I just had to look it up. They’ve been singing it & clapping around house for days. Happy Music Monday!

{Music Monday} M. Ward…

It’s starting out as a pretty mellow Monday & this new single from M. Ward’s upcoming album (release on April 10th), “A Wasteland Companion” is perfect to just put on repeat in the studio. Joel Trussell, the same director that did the video for “Chinese Translation” works his magic in this video as well.  Happy (Mellow)  Music Monday!

{Music Monday} cool collaboration…

I’ve been enjoying this First Listen: Kathleen Edwards, Voyageur over at npr music today.  Justin Vernon’s (Bon Iver) presence on the album seem like a perfect fit. Happy Music Monday!

Color + Stickers = Colorful 2012

Today is the first Monday of 2012 & it’s a day off for a lot of people- but I’m trying to get into a rhythm of production today. When I was cruising the web this morning (procrastinating but also in search of some inspiration) this work by Lionel Esteve caught my attention. It was posted on facebook & I immediately looked the artist up. It’s bright, cheerful, & it helped me ignore the rainy weather outside.  The artist used self adhesive dots.

Then this afternoon, I saw a post on the Colossal Art & Design blog that you really should check out.  At the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane this December,  there was an  installation by the artist Yayoi Kusama that was such a cool experiment.  Read, “This is What Happens When You Give Thousands of Stickers to Thousands of Kids” here. You may have already seen this because it spread like wildfire on blogs & facebook today. But I couldn’t help but post it as well. These two artists are very different, but I find it interesting that I saw both of their work today. Regardless, it sure cheered me up. Looks like the new year is full of color & dot stickers!

If you are looking for a little music this Monday, here is one of my favorite Music Monday posts from last year that I think fits this post perfectly.
