{Fabric Friday} Emilio Pucci…

My first memory of discovering Emilio Pucci designs was about 15 years ago when I lived in NYC. There was this really wonderful vintage clothing shop a few blocks from my school/studio. Every now and then I would stop by to browse & play dress up. This store had a lot of high end designers from the 50’s – 70’s and I remember being particularly taken with the bold & colorful designs of Emilio Pucci. One of the bizarre facts that I just learned, is that Pucci’s first clothing designs were for the Reed College skiing team- in 1935 he received a skiing scholarship from Reed College and later received his MA in social science. It just strikes me really interesting that someone born in Florence, Italy to a noble family, would end up in a small college in Portland, Oregon. I won’t go into his whole history, but this fact was one I found particularly notable. Needless to say, he was known for his bright & bold textiles and his designs have been sought after by quite a range of woman like Marilyn Monroe (she was been buried in one of his dresses), Jackie Kennedy, & Madonna.

I’m really enjoying my textile design history tangent that I have been on lately. I had to include that hilarious helmet design. You know, I live in the rainy NW & something like that just might be the answer to these grey rain filled days.  I think I could totally pull that off at the local grocery store, don’t you? Happy Fabric Friday! Do you have a favorite textile designer?

{Good Read} vintage books & la petite issue #3 …

It’s finally out – the much anticipated 3rd issue of la petite magazine launched this morning and it’s just beautiful! I’m particularly excited to share that I contributed an article about my love of vintage books & illustrations.  I can’t wait to sit down, take a break, & read it cover to cover because there are so many wonderful contributors in this issue like: Florence Rolando (Pirouette blog), Karine Candice Kong (Bodie and Fou), Molly Meg, Jennifer Arndt (Style Milk) and Holly Becker (Decor 8 ) -to name a few.

Diving into my collection of books to write this article was so much fun. But taking the pictures for it was my favorite part of the process. Thanks to Rachelle for including me among some truly inspirational contributors.

If you stopped by for Fabric Friday, don’t worry- you can get your textile fix for the week here

*I also wanted to mention that the very cute hat that Sayer is wearing in the photos is handmade by Armelle for Pure Pixie

{Everyday Inspiration} childhood nostalgia

My love of collecting vintage treasures has increased tremendously since becoming a mom. I seem to constantly be on the hunt for things that I enjoyed as a kid & now want to share. I suppose watching my son grow, makes me feel quite nostalgic about my own childhood. I try to see the world through his eyes & love to see his reaction to cool things that once caught my attention too.

I admit, that I do look for vintage toys for a variety of reasons, but there is a definitely “boy” slant now when I’m browsing the local thrifts & antique shops. I found this great spinning top not too long ago and was drawn to it for the color, shape, &  illustrations. I thought Sayer would like it & sure enough, I was right. The minute he saw it on my shelf in my studio, he was intrigued.

But the item that I purchase recently that really took me back to my childhood was the pair of rainbow suspenders that I found at 3ringcircus. When I saw them, I didn’t have to think twice – I got them for Sayer right away. I used to have Mork suspenders that I wore all of the time. They were a little thinner, had some stretch, & I loved them! He discovered them again the other day and decided that they looked like fireman suspenders or “benders” as he likes to call them. He wanted to wear them yesterday & I saw an photo shoot opportunity right in front of me. I really think that one of my favorite things to do is take photos of Sayer (as you may have guessed).
It’s nice to be able to combine all of the things that I love into a “work related” photo shoot. My little retro lovin’ klt:model & I had a fun afternoon yesterday – not to mention we got a lot done!  Is there something from your childhood that you’ve shared with your kiddo or keep around you as an adult?

big ideas & adding machines…

I’m knee deep in stacks of papers with visions of numbers & colored files dancing in my head today. Ah, tax time…gotta love it. It may be a little quiet in klt:sketchbook land in the next few days. But I will leave you with this really cool video that my friend Daria sent me a link to. She always has a way of knowing what my mood is. This sort of summed it up for me. It’s pretty genius (it’s slow to start so be patient… something more will happen). Thanks D- it’s very cool indeed!  {images via here, here, here, & here}

Office supply stores here I come! Maybe by the end of the day I will be able to make some music like that with my calculator, printer, & file cabinet….
