I had a chance to pop into one of my favorite shops called IDEAL a few weekends ago. (Last October, I had a trunk show at IDEAL & posted about it here if you would like a peek into the shop.) I was actually meeting up with one of the two owners, Lisa to hang out & chat about design, books & motherhood that day. But, I fit in a browse through the shop before we left & ended up purchasing two books, Moon Man & The Three Robbers. Lisa is a lover of children’s books too & recommended them, plus I was immediately drawn to the illustrations. When I got home, I realized that I had another book illustrated by Tomi Ungerer called, Snail, where are you?, that I got for Sayer a long time ago. Lisa had also reminded me about another one of his books, Crictor, that I remembered really liking as a kid. So it appears that I’ve enjoyed his work for a some time now.

A few days after I bought those cool Tomi Ungerer books at IDEAL, I stumbled on this post when I was cruising through my favorite blogs. Not only did I become even more enchanted with this artist & writer, but I discovered that I had just bought a book that he had illustrated (but didn’t write) in the $1 bin at the thrift store a week prior called, Seeds and More Seeds. The illustrations are more like Crictor & I also liked the style of typography.

I always enjoy learning about artists & writers and finding little interviews like this one. I can officially say that I’m a Tomi Ungerer fan. Are you?

It’s finally out – the much anticipated 3rd issue of la petite magazine launched this morning and it’s just beautiful! I’m particularly excited to share that I contributed an article about my love of vintage books & illustrations. I can’t wait to sit down, take a break, & read it cover to cover because there are so many wonderful contributors in this issue like: Florence Rolando (Pirouette blog), Karine Candice Kong (Bodie and Fou), Molly Meg, Jennifer Arndt (Style Milk) and Holly Becker (Decor 8 ) -to name a few.

Diving into my collection of books to write this article was so much fun. But taking the pictures for it was my favorite part of the process. Thanks to Rachelle for including me among some truly inspirational contributors.

While I certainly love all of the items that I include in my four fun finds posts, this one is on a special wish list. When I read about this book in UPPERCASE Magazine, I got really excited to see it in person. I’m already a big fan of their books- I have the Suitcase Series: Camilla Engman that I bought myself for Christmas last year. The design of the book is a cool as the inside. It’s the whole package.

I think it would be safe to say that any project that UPPERCASE takes on, would catch my interest, but The Elegant Cockroach is first on my list. Doesn’t it look great? I think I would qualify as a whimsical adult, don’t you?

{Vintage Inspiration} Art Seiden…

Sayer and I just finished up story time and he chose all of my Art Seiden books to read today. He really is fond of them so I thought it would be a good time to share my little vintage collection with you. I’ve been collecting anything with Art Seiden illustrations for a while now and my favorites are from the ’60’s Romper Room – Wonder Book – series. Sayer loves the train books in particular. But here is a tiny peek into each one…

The Romper Room Do Dee Book of Manners by Nancy Claster – pictures by Art Seiden – Wonder Books 1977

Yep, we read them all today. This Manners book is really funny- it cracks Sayer up too. There is even a “mother check off chart” to see if your child is a “Do Bee”. I won’t tell you the results of our check list. But I will tell you that Sayer likes the “Don’t Bee” boy’s outfit better, hmmm. I will bring these out again to share more another time. This is just a taste. I really enjoy looking at how Art Seiden’s illustrations have evolved over the years, along with how much they have influenced current illustrators today. Hope you liked our Art Seiden story time…

He really is fond of them so I thought it would be a good time to share my little vintage collection with you.
