{Photos} Summertime Fair…

One of my favorite things about summertime, is the county fair. It’s so fun to see everything through Sayer’s eyes & the camera lens. This year Sayer was much more confident and a little more mellow- as if he was taking everything in to enjoy later. Last year he rode the same rides by himself- so it all was old hat.  As much as I adore the colors of the fair, my favorite photos from the day are in black & white.

But wait… I did catch some color with iphone. Have I told you how much I love instagram & phone apps?

While it’s September already, I’m still going to enjoy this last bit of summer. Sayer doesn’t go back to pre-school until next week & the weather is beautiful right now. We have a few more family adventures ahead & I’m holding on to summer tight…

How about you?

{Music Monday} Pure Imagination…

Thanks to the $5 sale bin at Target, we all have been enjoying the original (& my favorite version)  Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory this weekend. Funny how I vividly remembered some of the scenes & rediscovered others as an adult. I’ve been humming this song since Friday- sometimes breaking into a dance as well. So, I thought I would share my Gene Wilder/ Willy Wonka love. Hope you are having a great Labor Day & that it’s full of pure imagination!
Happy Music Monday!

{Cardboard} Give me shelter part II…

Part II of Friday’s post
Not only did Chris have work in the “Shelter”  show at the Anchor Art Space, but he also had a little booth representing the gallery at the local art festival where he constructed a cardboard house in two days, out of small pieces of cardboard, in front of curious spectators. He documented the process in a few instagram shots below.

Sayer & I visited him working after we stopped by the gallery that weekend to say hi & help a bit – along with finding a little bit of shady shelter (it was actually very hot that weekend). It was so much fun watching the two of them work on this space. I know Sayer has plans for where it’s going to go at home when the festival is finished….
It’s so cool that Chris made this with just cardboard- no glue gun or anything. He said because of time, he had to use a few pieces of tape for the roof- but other than that he just notched the cardboard pieces together. The most magical part, is the little mini houses that you saw in the first picture, were strung inside the house when it was finished.

I always find it so interesting to see how Chris approaches things This project is a good example of how his mind works. All in a few days a cool shelter was built (using one material) – and in about 15 minutes it was taken down & is in a pile in our basement waiting for the perfect opportunity to be constructed again. Another funny thing is the wonderful advertising this house was for Seattle Pottery Supply. Lots of boxes of clay were used for this project as well. I think Cardboard Man lived up to his name on this project, don’t you?

{Music Monday} Mystery Film Experiment…

This new Sigur Ros video caught my attention today- it’s beautiful…  Happy Music Monday! What are you listening to?

{Anchor Art Space} Give me “Shelter”…

Last Friday there was an art opening at a fairly new, local gallery called, Anchor Art Space. Chris had three pieces in the show that were all made out of cardboard, having to do with the shows theme “shelter” (they’re in the front windows). Chris & I attended the opening ourselves – yes we had a date night! But on Sunday, I took Sayer to see the show while Chris worked down the street in a booth (representing Anchor Art Space) at the Anacortes Art Festival. I’ll post more about that tomorrow, but for now I wanted to give you a tour of the gallery through the eyes of a 4 1/2 year old. The curators of the exhibit & active board members, Natalie Niblack & Ann Reid, are also art educators – so the gallery has a very child friendly atmosphere.

Jasmine, also the educator at the Museum of Northwest Art, shows Sayer how to work a piece by architect, Tom Theisen. She was very helpful in explaining the art to Sayer along with encouraging him to explore & observe at his own pace.

The newest piece that Chris finished was actually inspired by Sayer’s room. The imagery was derived completely by Sayer’s things. The piece was put together at the space for the first time – a pop up sculpture of sorts & Sayer hadn’t seen it yet. This was his first sighting & he loved it! After observing it from all angles, he wanted to document it with a drawing.

So he drew….

... & drew…

& drew some more.

It was so much fun to see the show with Sayer & to see the curiosity & admiration in his eyes when he saw Chris’ piece. I highly recommend seeing an art gallery/ museum with your kids- it’s really quite refreshing.

Happy Friday! Hope your weekend is full of creativity & interesting sights!

{Inspiration} Caine’s Arcade…

By now you probably know that my husband makes a lot of cool stuff with cardboard. This last weekend he had a booth (representing a local gallery) at an arts festival where he made a house out of pieces of cardboard in 2 days (I’ll get into that more later). During this presentation, he was able to chat with many interesting people & one of them recommended that he see a short film called, “Caine’s Arcade”.  After he watched it, he immediately shared it with Sayer & I. Of course, I was taken with Caine – the 9 year old that made an arcade out of cardboard. So much so, I had to share his film in case you hadn’t heard his story yet. The short film is about 10 minutes long & it’s sure to inspire – check it out….

This was just what I needed to see this week. What a nice reminder of the power of creativity & human kindness.  Hope you are having a great week!

{Beach Day} The Piping Plover…

I can never get enough of the beach. I go often to one that is not far from my house. It’s a beach that I used to visit in high school to clear my mind – no matter what the season- & it still mellows me right out.  So, when I have a new klt:works tee to photograph (particularly a beachy one) it’s my “go to” spot with my guys/models. Here are a few of my favorite shots from a fun day of shooting the new Piping Plover tees.

Sayer told me that he was “relaxing” in this photo.  We were all salty & tuckered – a day well spent. Do you live near a beach? Where is your favorite “go to” spot in the summer?

{Inspiration} 141…

It’s been a little quiet here on the blog lately – in part due to some eye issues that I was having. It seems that my age & my habit of not taking many breaks in the day have taken their toll on my eyes. Nothing to worry about however, I just need to step back a bit & learn to close my peepers every now & then. I took a little break from taking  & editing massive amount of photos & blogging to rejuvenate & learn some new habits. The cool thing, is that through this whole process, I discovered an awesome NW company (out of Portland, OR)  called 141 Eyewear. Their philosophy & design is top notch!

While searching for a new pair of glasses at Eyes on Fremont  in Seattle (my favorite place to get glasses), I was introduced to this fantastic company. I actually fell in love with the frames (particularly the gorgeous blue inside) before I knew that they give glasses to kids in need. It was a complete bonus! I’m also really tickled that they are based in the NW too! Giving glasses to kids in need is an issue that is so close to my heart. I’ve been a social worker & worked with a variety of underprivileged populations over the years – plus,  I wore glasses when I was 4 & Sayer got glasses when he was 3.  I get shivers when I see this video & really wanted to share.

I love my new glasses & knowing they are made by such a wonderful company is icing on the cake. Thanks Eyes on Fremont for the introduction!  Ok, now I had better get back to work…

{Inspiration} Butterscotch & Beesting…

When I first saw these photos, I was immediately smitten. Then my eyes honed in on that hat! It really resonated with me. I could completely picture it on Sayer & was pleased when he said he liked it….

Yep, you guessed it, I ordered him the Betty Butterscotch “Bobblescotch” hat from Butterscotch & Beesting in  a heartbeat. But I have to say, the whole shop was so much fun to cruise through! I’m also in love with these pillows. Camilla Westergaard is one talented lady with such an imaginative vision. Not surprisingly, her blog is just as inspiring…

Last week, the three of us headed out to one of my favorite spots for a little picnic (& a mini photoshoot). Here are some of my favorite shots of the day that just happen to include the very fun “Bobblescotch” hat.

I thought the hat was so perfect for Sayer- it totally fits his personality. He got a such a kick out the little ball on the top (& so did we). I also really love how it looked with the new rooster & kitty tees!

Happy weekend everyone!

{cool collaboration} more courtneycourtney …

I’ve said it before, but I’ll keep on sayin’ it –  I love sending Courtney extra klt:works prints for  courtneycourtney! Her designs are so vibrant & fun, you can’t help but smile when you see them, particularly when you see her adorable customers wearing her creations (like sweet Pip above)! I was lucky enough to be a customer this year too! Courtney made Sayer a birthday tee  with his favorite klt:owl tee that he had outgrown.

So, I’m happy to announce that tomorrow is klt:works Tuesday at courtneycourtney! She has been busy working on 10 new dresses with klt:works prints that will be on sale tomorrow. Let’s take a closer look at a few of my favorites…

… But really they are all fantastic!
If you see something that is perfect for the little girl in your life, make sure you sign up for Courtney’s newsletter here for your chance to snatch one up – her dresses always sell really fast!
